Let's admit it....even though Cinco De Mayo usually falls on a weekday, we will make an exception and have a mouthwatering margarita to celebrate the occasion. We also wanted to create a go-to summer drink that was fresh and not your typical classic margarita. This margarita recipe is unique using the complex flavors of guanabana (Soursop), a tropical fruit common in the caribbean, central and south America. Of course, we made Ali a virgin version of this since she loves soursop shakes =)!
What is Guanabana (Soursop)?
In Hispanic America, soursop is known as guanábana and sometimes called the custard apple and is a fruit of a braodleaf, flowering, evergreen tree. Soursop is a prickly, pear-shaped tropical fruit with a soft and juicy inside. With an aroma similar to pineapple, its flavor has been described as a combination of strawberries and apple with sour citrus flavor notes, contrasting with an underlying thick creamy texture similar to a banana.
Soursop has many medicinal uses such as promoting sleep, controlling diabetes, and relieving back pain. Don't eat the seeds though—the seeds are toxic.
The soursop nectar can be found in your local grocery store. Some popular brands are Goya Soursop Nectar or Jumex Guanabana Nectar.

Guanábana (Soursop) Margaritas Recipe
INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup lime juice
1/2 cup guanabana nectar
3/4 cup tequila (eg. Teramana Tequila)
1/4 c Cointreau or any orange liqueur of preference
Himalayan salt
Lime slices for garnish
Optional Sweetener: agave nectar or simple syrup, to taste
Recipe for Simple Syrup: 1/4 cup water + 1/4 cup sugar
BUT!!!.....We decided to try something completely new and really delicious to sweeten the margaritas: Owl's Brew STRAWBERRY MANHATTAN Cocktail Mixer:

Owl's Brew Strawberry Manhattan cocktail mixer is made with fresh-brewed organic darjeeling tea, strawberries, & hibiscus. We topped each final soursop margarita with 1 oz of the Owl's Brew STRAWBERRY MANHATTAN Cocktail Mixer.
For the tequila, we love to use The Rock's Teremana Tequila Reposado. It has notes of oak and vanilla with an oh so smooth rich finish. Seriously, we use this in all our drinks lately!
DIRECTIONS
If you are using the Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, heat the water and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved. This will be your simple syrup.
Next, chill the glasses in the refrigerator prior to making the margaritas. Once chilled run a lime wedge around the rim and dip the glass rim in himalayan salt.
In a shaker, fill half the shaker with ice, then add the lime juice, guanabana nectar, tequila, orange liqueur and simple syrup or other sweetner.
Shake well and pour into the salt-rimmed chilled glass.
Garnish with a lime slice or edible flower, serve and enjoy!
Cheers!
