INGREDIENTS

For the donuts

2 Tbsp butter

2 Tbsp organic shortening

1 1/2 c warm whole milk

1/3 c warm water

3 tsp sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp nutmeg

2 large eggs

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

5 1/4 c white flour

For the Frosting

  • 2 c confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 c heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1/8 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Dissolve yeast in luke-warm water. Set aside so the yeast can bloom.
  2. Heat the milk in microwave for 2-3 minutes.
  3. While milk is heating add butter and shortening to a large bowl. Slowly pour the warm milk over it and whisk until mixed and butter and shortening are melted.
  4. In an electric mixer, add the yeast mixture and the butter-milk mixture. Mix at medium speed.
  5. Add salt, sugar, nutmeg, and vanilla. Add the eggs and mix well.
  6. Add flour to the mixture in three additions and mix until a soft dough forms. NOTE: You do not want your dough to be tough. Mix until your dough is smooth.
  7. Sprinkle flour onto a clean surface and pour batter onto it. Gently knead dough batter until the surface is not sticky to the touch. NOTE: The dough should be very soft but not sticky that you can’t handle it fairly easily. Place the soft dough into a lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl and let rise for 2 hours. Dough should be about double in size when done.
  8. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out to about a 1 inch thickness. Cut the donuts out as closely as possible. Place donuts on a lined baking sheet. Save the donut holes as well for frying. Cover and let rise for at least 2 hours.
  9. Once the donuts and holes are done rising, heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil to about 365 degrees F and fry the donuts until golden brown. Fry each side approximately one minute and turn over.
  10. While donuts are frying make your frosting. To make the frosting mix 2 cups powdered sugar with the heavy cream and vanilla. Add water as needed to adjust the consistency desired.
  11. Decorate as desired. We used crush oreos, dehydrated strawberries and sprinkles.
