This collection of 4 books to read in 2024 for Insight in relationships and creativity encopasses a diverse range of topics that deeply resonated with me. From the heartfelt exploration of family dynamics in the Asian American memoir —very relatable as an Asian American family— to the immersive journeys through history in the gripping historical fiction.  Each book offers a unique perspective that fuels our creativity and enriches our understanding of the world. These books have given wonderful insight into resilience, relationships, and creativity.

Book: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

Crying in HMart by Michelle Zauner is a poignant memoir that delves into the intricacies of identity, loss, and the complex relationship between Asian immigrants and their children. Zauner beautifully portrays the struggles and triumphs of navigating the dual cultural identities inherent in the Asian-American experience.  As a first generation Filipina American and growing up in a household with Asian immigrant parents, this book was completely relatable to our family experience and brings true reason why this book is meaningful.

Throughout the book, one of the most compelling aspects of the book is the profound bond between Zauner and her mother, which serves as the emotional backbone of the narrative. Through her heartfelt storytelling, Zauner illustrates the unique challenges faced by immigrants and their descendants in reconciling their heritage with their present realities.

One of the most resonant quotes from “Crying in HMart” encapsulates this sentiment beautifully: “Our mothers were our first homes, and that’s why we’re always trying to return to them.” This line poignantly captures the longing for connection and the enduring bond between mother and child, despite the inevitable trials and tribulations of life.

Overall, Zauner’s memoir serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring our roots while embracing the journey of self-discovery and acceptance. It is a celebration of resilience, love, and the enduring spirit of the immigrant experience.

Book: The Creative Act - A Way of Being by Rick Rubin
Book: The Creative Act – A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin is not just a book; it is truly a beacon of illumination for anyone navigating the labyrinth of creativity. I started reading this book a few months ago and have only been reading one chapter at a time each day.  Each chapter is only a few pages long BUT it provides so much insight, inspiration and wisdom, for creatives and non-creatives alike. Reflecting upon each chapter, it extends beyond artistic technique into the realms of self-discovery and empowerment.

With Rick Rubin’s masterful exposition of the creative process, akin to nurturing a tree from seed to majestic fruition, resonates deeply. It’s as if he has distilled the very essence of creativity into words, making it accessible and relatable to creators of all backgrounds and skill levels. By acknowledging the universal struggles artists face—whether battling stage fright, self-doubt, or impostor syndrome—Rubin provides solace and solidarity. He reminds us that in our vulnerability lies our strength, and in our shared struggles lies our kinship.

Overall, Rubin’s teachings on influencing one’s reality hint at a deeper truth: that creativity is not merely an act but a way of being—a lens through which we perceive and shape the world around us.

This book is not just a book to be read once and shelved or given away; it’s a lifelong companion, a source of inspiration to return to time and again. Indeed, “Creative Act: A Way of Being” has been a guiding light for anyone embarking on the journey of creation, offering illumination, encouragement, and endless possibility.  A true addition to our collection!

Creativity is not merely an act but a way of being—a lens through which we perceive and shape the world around us.

Book: The Knightingale by Kristin Hannah
Book: The Knightingale by Kristin Hannah

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah stands as a true testament to the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity. Through the lens of war-torn France during the Holocaust, Hannah weaves a tapestry of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination to survive.

Central to the narrative is the strong bond between sisters, a bond strengthened through hardship and tested by the ravages of war. Vianne has a quiet strength and resilience, her steadfastness a beacon of hope in the darkest of times. Isabelle, on the other hand, is a fiery spirit, defying convention and risking everything to fight for what she believes in – freedom.

In addition, “The Nightingale” shines a light on the often overlooked contributions of women during wartime. From acts of quiet heroism to daring acts of defiance, the women of Hannah’s novel play a pivotal role in shaping the course of history.

Book: Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano

Hello, Beautiful by Ann Napolitano which captures the essence of relationships—both romantic and platonic—in all their complexity.  This novel invites readers to contemplate the layers of emotions and motivations that drive individuals to form bonds with one another, while also exploring the challenges and conflicts that arise along the way.

Ultimately, one of the elements that stood out to me from “Hello, Beautiful” is Napolitano’s ability to show how relationships evolve over time, from the initial spark of attraction to the depths of intimacy and the trials of endurance.  In “Hello, Beautiful,” Napolitano reminds us that relationships are not simply black and white but rather full of various emotions and experiences.
