Bonjour Paris! Recommendations Traveling Through the City of Lights

Bonjour, fellow adventurers!

Ah, Paris, the city that has long been synonymous with culture, beauty, and romance. We have alway imagined wandering through the charming streets of Paris with each step a new adventure waiting to unfold. This winter we were able to finally have the opportunity to soak in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city.  Our week-long trip was full of history, beauty and culture.  Of course, along the way, we had to sample all the divine buttery croissants at quaint cafés, wander through picturesque gardens, and travel along the banks of the Seine.  We truly made this trip about creating lasting memories, deepening bonds, and nurturing a love for culture and adventure that we share.

The Eiffel Tower

Of course when you think of Paris, you will always think of the Eiffel Tower. The story of the Eiffel Tower begins in 1889 when it was erected as the centerpiece of the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the tower faced criticism from some Parisians who deemed its iron lattice structure an eyesore. However, over time, it has become an enduring symbol of Parisian ingenuity and elegance.

As we approached, we noticed the intricate details that adorn its frame, each rivet and beam telling a story of meticulous craftsmanship, dedication and time. At night, when the city lights illuminate its silhouette, the Eiffel Tower takes on a magical aura, sparkling against the dark sky. Ascending its heights, whether by elevator or stairway, offers a breathtaking panorama of Paris. From the top, the city spreads out before you like a living tapestry, with landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe and the Seine River. The view from the Eiffel Tower is not just a sight to behold, but a profound experience that captures the essence of Parisian charm.

We recommend securing your tickets through the official Eiffel Tower website well in advance, ideally one to two months before your planned visit. By logging into the website early, you can ensure availability for your preferred date and time slot. This is definitely beneficial for those who appreciate planning ahead and prefer to start their day early, as it significantly reduces the likelihood of encountering lengthy queues or waiting periods.

Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe stands majestically at the heart of Paris, a timeless symbol of French resilience and triumph. Positioned at the center of the bustling city of Paris, this iconic monument radiates grandeur and historical significance. It draws visitors from around the globe, offering panoramic views of Parisian boulevards and landmarks from its observation deck. Surrounded by the vibrant energy of the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe serves as a reminder of France’s rich heritage and lasting spirit. It is a monument to France’s military history and national pride. Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, it was completed in 1836 and commemorates the victories of the French army. And for a unique perspective, consider visiting at sunset when the arch is bathed in golden light as we did.  Here you can also travel down the endless streets that lead from the center of the Arc de Triomphe circle, including Champs de Elysee, a beautiful historical street filled with designer shops and restaurants.

Palace of Versailles

One of our favorites throughout our trip was our visit to Versailles.  A short train ride from Paris you are transported to the lavish splendor of the Palace of Versailles, the former residence of French kings and queens. Built in the 17th century by Louis XIV, the Sun King, Versailles is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and opulent design. Of all the rooms within this grand palace, The Hall of Mirrors in Versailles is a breathtaking masterpiece of opulence and grandeur. Adorned with elaborately decorated mirrors on one wall, reflecting the shimmering light from an equal number of windows opposite, the room creates a dazzling effect that epitomizes the luxury of the French monarchy.

While the palace itself is undeniably grand, do not miss the chance to explore the sprawling gardens and meticulously manicured lawns, ornate fountains, and even a charming hamlet built for Marie Antoinette. To truly enjoy the entire area, we recommend renting a bike or cart to travel the vast land of Versailles. Again we were able to enter the palace first thing in the morning since we purchased our tickets online from the official Palace of Versailles website ahead of time.

The Louvre

Housing over 35,000 works of art spanning thousands of years, the Louvre is a treasure trove of human creativity and expression. Originally a medieval fortress and later a royal palace, it was transformed into a museum during the French Revolution. Today, it is not only the world’s largest art museum but also one of the most visited. To avoid the crowds, consider arriving early in the morning and heading straight to the museum’s most famous masterpieces, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the ancient Greek statue, Venus de Milo. And don’t forget to marvel at the striking glass pyramid designed by architect I.M. Pei, which serves as the museum’s iconic entrance. Advanced tickets can also be purchased ahead of time on the Louvre’s website.

Musée d’Orsay:

Housed in a former railway station, the Musée d’Orsay is a haven for lovers of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Its collection boasts works by renowned artists like Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh, whose vibrant brushstrokes and innovative techniques revolutionized the art world in the late 19th century. As you wander through its galleries, allow yourself to be transported to a time of light, color, and emotion. And when you need a break, be sure to visit the museum’s charming café, where you can enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee surrounded by exquisite works of art.

Traveler’s Recommendations:
  • Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring Paris’s cobblestone streets and expansive landmarks.
  • Embrace the café culture and indulge in a café au lait or a freshly baked croissant at a sidewalk café – it’s the perfect way to soak up the city’s atmosphere.
  • Consider investing in a Paris Museum Pass or purchasing tickets on their official website for skip-the-line access to many of the city’s top attractions, saving you time and hassle.
  • Take the time to explore Paris’s lesser-known neighborhoods and hidden gems, such as the charming streets of Montmartre or the vibrant markets of Belleville.
  • Above all, savor every moment in this magical city – whether you’re admiring world-class art, sipping wine along the Seine, or simply taking a leisurely stroll through its picturesque streets, Paris has a way of captivating the soul and inspiring endless adventures.

As we reflect back on our recent journey through Paris, we hope you’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the history, art, and culture that make this city truly remarkable. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, Paris never fails to enchant and inspire. So until we meet again, au revoir, mes amis – may your travels be filled with joy, wonder, and endless discoveries!

Stay tuned for more recommendations including restaurants, cafes, and shopping!
